8 Things You Absolutely Must Do In Your First Year of Freelance

Justin Heap

--

I’ve been freelancing in some form or another for more than two decades, many times as the sole provider for our family. My diverse career has also found me working with teams from Twitter, to the Bank of New York Mellon, to Fuller Theological Seminary, to design firms, startups, local artists, and more.

Here’s why you can trust me, though: I made a shit ton of mistakes and I’ve had a lot of time to learn from them! Yes, there were some wins along the way, of course. But I failed far more often than I succeeded. The freelance life is mad challenging.

Additionally, my years of mistake-making and learning has really helped me become a resource for so many others jumping into remote work, freelancing, independent work, or some form of digital nomadism. After many, many conversations with friends and clients alike, I consistently found myself coming back to these foundational elements of advice.

Give it a read and let me know what resonates and what you might add!
